Day #19 - The Perfect Date

Brooks Rattigan is desperate to go to Yale. So that he can afford it, he creates an app where girls pay him to be their perfect stand-in date for an evening for any occasion of their choosing.

I don't have a lot to say about this movie. I don't like it. It's a very weird premise and they did not pull it off very well at all.

Brooks does one job for a popular guy at school where he takes his cousin Celia to her school dance for money. From this, he creates an app with his best friend Murph called The Stand In - girls can choose personality traits and outfits to create the perfect guy for their evening. Brooks also pretends to date Celia on the side so that they can both get their crushes attentions. Both of them quickly realise that they people they have crushes on are wooden, empty, snooty rich kids. Along the way, Brooks ruins his relationships with both Murph and Celia because the app makes him a bad friend.

I'm not entirely sure what about the app makes him a bad friend to be honest, Brooks pretty much has the same narcissistic personality throughout and he only stats to change when he loses his friends. But only slightly. Yes he becomes less superficial and materialistic but he still somehow makes his friends feelings about how lonely he gets without them. His apologies to both of them are long paragraphs about who he keeps pretending to be and that he's sorry if that made them feel bad.

Strangely though, that's not the wierdest part of this movie. Nor is it the fact that an 18-year-old can code a perfectly working app in two days. The most unbelievable part of it all is that an American teenager doesn't know what Reddit is. That line really threw me for a minute there.

If I were you, I wouldn't waste my time with this movie. I have watched it twice in my lifetime and that is two times too many.
