Day #20 - Bridget Jones's Diary

Bridget Jones is single in her 30s. She doesn't like her body, she finds her job boring, and she hates that at every family gathering she is asked how her love life is going, when it isn't going at all. She starts writing a diary with the thought that it might help her lose weight, stop smoking and start being healthier and then maybe she will find the man of her dreams. But is that man bad boy Daniel Cleaver or put-together Mark Darcy?

​​This is a romcom classic. Renee Zellweger perfectly embodies the awkward and charmingly funny Bridget Jones. And the story is coloured with only the best music from the 60s-00s.

Bridget is a great heroine - she is imperfect, she can be rude, she can be pathetically desperate and she acts and speaks without thought. So many romcoms from that era have leading ladies who have the perfect body, hair, job (not that there's anything wrong with this) and expect the audience to feel sorry for them for not having a boyfriend. It's unrealistic. Bridget Jones is someone that every woman can relate to. She doesn't meet the high beauty standards set for every woman, and she isn't this perfect English lady - in fact, she is the exact opposite.

Not that there aren't things that annoy me about this film; we as an audience are made to feel sorry for a woman who has a beautiful flat next to Borough Market that she can somehow afford on a junior publicist's salary, and she has two of film's most attractive men, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant, fighting over her for an hour and a half. However, the loveable nature of the leading lady does distract you from this very well.

This (and it's subsequent films) is my perfect movie for a night where I'm not feeling so great about myself and my situation. It is, and always will be, a classic.
