Day #21 - Sex and the City 2

Best friends Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte decide to take a break from the hustle and bustle of New York City and head to Abu Dhabi, where Samantha's former partner is filming a movie.

This is an interesting one for me because I have never seen the series or the first movie. I went into it completely blind with no knowledge of the characters, apart from a few references to it from other TV shows and movies. Which probably wasn't the greatest idea because I did get lost at some points.

The movie was okay. Maybe it's because I haven't watched anything previously. It didn't exactly grip me. I'm not entirely sure whether I'm supposed to like the characters or not - I only liked Miranda, she was the only one who seemed respectable. Samantha was the worst, completely disregarding all the customs in Abu Dhabi and her behaviour was so embarrassing it made some scenes completely unwatchable.

This is definitely a film that has not gotten better with age. Whereas the jokes were probably acceptable in 2010 (and the early 2000s when the original series took place) there are certainly many parts of it that are completely unacceptable now. If they released the same film in 2021, there would be mass outrage which would definitely lead to a boycott.

Despite the apparent ignorance (maybe Abu Dhabi wasn't the right place to set this particular venture) there was a lot to enjoy, but maybe a second movie was a step too far for this franchise. If anything, it did intrigue me a little bit, and may have convinced me to give the original series a go. I wonder if I would have a different opinion if I had watched everything that came before and had an attachment to the characters. Maybe that's an article for another time!
