Day #4 - Fifty Shades of Grey

When Anastasia Steele interviews Christian Grey for an article in her campus newspaper she never predicted the path it would put her life on. They find themselves drawn to each other, and Ana enters into an intense sexual affair, pushing her boundaries of pain and pleasure.

Honestly, I was not looking forward to watching this again. In fact, I put it off for as long as possible throughout the day. Not because of the nature of the film, purely because the story is empty and I find it boring. It's slow moving and tries too hard to keep every scene as sexy as possible, even when it's completely unnecessary.

The actual plot is creepy and I don't see how anyone can find their relationship attractive in any way. It's also very clear that the only part of the film that any effort was put into is the sex scenes - I am fully aware that this is the whole point of the movie, but I am someone who likes to be invested in what they're watching, and there is nothing here that keeps me invested. And the sex scenes make me laugh more than anything. The sex has the added awkwardness of also being borderline abusive (not because of the acts, but because he ignores her safe word completely - I am not here to kink shame).

I only ever watched this film in the first place because of Dakota Johnson - I adore her. But this is not a film of hers that I enjoy, and a film that I only ever watch to make fun of with friends. 

I think the biggest problem with this movie is that the makers took it too seriously from the get-go. If this film had been made to mock the book then maybe I would have enjoyed it more. I think the biggest question is why the book was ever written in the first place.
