Day #25 - All The Bright Places

25/2/2021

Violet Markey is grieving the loss of her sister in a car accident. She is suffering with anxiety and PTSD from the event and has stopped living. Theodore Finch has his own dark past, but when he meets Violet on the ledge of the bridge where her sister died, he makes it his mission to help her move on and find the joy in life again.

Another stunning movie. Elle Fanning and Justice Smith play wonderfully off of each other. The way they both capture the pain and loneliness that these characters feel individually, and the happiness and completion that they feel when they're together is mesmerising.

Before you watch this film, please make sure to have tissues at the ready - those who have read the book will know why. All The Bright Places deals with grief, loss and heartbreak all at the same time. There are small pockets of pure, unadulterated joy throughout, but it is mostly raw misery -  in a way this makes the joyful moments extremely precious. These teenagers will make you feel things so intensely that it is overwhelming at times.

Despite this, you are left with a message of hope. Although this film is filled with darkness, the characters' journey to find the most meaningful places to them in Indiana shows the audience that there is beauty and light to be found even in the smallest of moments. Violet makes reference to a quote  that her sister would always say to her when she had a bad day, from her favourite poet, Cesare Pavese; "We do not remember the days, we remember the moments".

There's nothing else I can say about this film without ruining it! It's engaging, it's simple, it is beautiful. I urge you to watch it.

Day #24 - The Half Of IT

Ellie Chu is shy and introverted. She's also a fantastic writer, and other students pay her to write their essays which, in turn, helps her keep the lights on for her dad. One day, Paul Munsky asks her to write a love letter for him to the beautiful Aster Flores - except he doesn't know that Ellie likes her too.

This is such a beautiful film. There are so many themes which are covered so well; the overwhelming nature of teenage love in high school, the complexities of LGBT love when you're young and still trying to figure out who you are (and living in a small American Christian town), and the hardship that immigrant families face in America, specifically Chinese immigrants. At its heart, this is a story about soulmates and whether you can find them at such a young age.

Unlike a lot of teenage romance films, each character is so complex. They aren't just assigned "jock" or "nerd" or "popular girl" - the film may introduce them this way, but as it carries on you get shown all these tiny details that make each character real and unique. Yes, the popular girl is pretty, but did you also know that she is a great artist and she adores books? Yes, the jock is good at sports, but did you know his passion lies in inventing new foods? Yes, the nerd is intelligent and can write a great essay, but did you know she can write a beautiful song too? You get to learn so much about these characters in such a small space of time that you almost can't believe this film is less than two hours long.

This film made me feel so many emotions. It's funny, it's sweet, it made me cry a lot. It is wonderful.

Netflix got it right with this one.

Day #23 - Tall Girl

23/2/2021

Jodie is 6'1". Which makes her the laughing stock of her school. No boy will go out with her because she is so tall. Then an exchange student arrives. A tall exchange student. Jodies desperately wants to be with him.

This Netflix Original came out in 2019 and I have actively avoided it since. I was never going to try and attempt to watch this film. But I am loyal to the challenge so I gave it a go.

I wish I hadn't. Jodie is a whiny and unlikeable character. It's sad that she has been bullied for her height her entire life, and it has clearly given her many insecurities. But she acts as if she is the only person in the world who deserves to feel sad. Yes, it's frustrating that both her mum and sister are multi-award winning beauty queens who were both insanely popular at school, whilst she is called a freak for being tall. She makes hating her height her entire personality.

Then there's the people in her life that she takes it out on. Her dad, whilst he is overbearing and slightly paranoid, recognises her insecurities and tries to help her as much as he can to become more comfortable. In return, she shouts at him and slams doors in his face.

Jack is one of her best friends since childhood, and it's very clear he has a massive crush on her. This boy worships the floor she walks on. Not that this means she has to date him or return those feelings, and he doesn't expect that from her. The minute he decides to try and move on and not make her the centre of his world anymore, she rejects him and makes him out to be a horrible person.

Then there is Fareeda, the only character I actually liked. She is Jodie's other best friend and she spends all day snapping at people for bullying Jodie. All Jodie does is complain to her about how hard her life is and doesn't leave Fareeda any room to vent about her problems (if she even has any, this girl has next to no screen time). There is even a section where Jodie, then Jack, have lunch with her and she makes the comment that neither of them have time for her problems. I want a movie about Fareeda, it would be a lot more interesting than this.

This is not a movie that is worth a watch. Netflix really missed with this one.

DAy #22 - Just Go With It

Danny realised a long time ago that newly-divorced men do the best with the ladies, especially if the divorce is messy and the man is still sad. So he carries around a wedding ring to con women with. However, he never expects to fall for one of them. He pays his assistant and her kids to play his ex-wife and family, and, before he knows it, he's in Hawaii with them all desperately trying to push his lie into a relationship.

Adam Sandler makes a lot of movies. Pair him up with either Drew Barrymore or Jennifer Aniston and it will be a good one.  They have an unexpected chemistry that really works, especially with this kind of storyline.

I have a love-hate relationship with plots like this. They are funny and interesting, and they always bring people together who never thought about the possibility of a romantic relationship between them before. I am also shocked that these characters really believe that a lengthly, complicated lie is the correct basis to build a relationship on. It's extremely frustrating. I'm constantly commenting throughout, questioning the plausibility of the lie long-term. How do they possibly think they can keep it up? The most important thing though is that it shows them who they really have a connection with and who truly matters.

This movie is fun, it's heartwarming, and there's a few good laughs in it - granted, some of them are overplayed but not for too long, thankfully. The only thing I hated was the character Eddie, who was annoying and didn't add much to the story at all. I'm not entirely sure why he was there. If I were you, I would just ignore him when you watch it. It's an enjoyable, lazy afternoon watch.

Day #21 - Sex and the City 2

21/2/2021

Best friends Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte decide to take a break from the hustle and bustle of New York City and head to Abu Dhabi, where Samantha's former partner is filming a movie.

This is an interesting one for me because I have never seen the series or the first movie. I went into it completely blind with no knowledge of the characters, apart from a few references to it from other TV shows and movies. Which probably wasn't the greatest idea because I did get lost at some points.

The movie was okay. Maybe it's because I haven't watched anything previously. It didn't exactly grip me. I'm not entirely sure whether I'm supposed to like the characters or not - I only liked Miranda, she was the only one who seemed respectable. Samantha was the worst, completely disregarding all the customs in Abu Dhabi and her behaviour was so embarrassing it made some scenes completely unwatchable.

This is definitely a film that has not gotten better with age. Whereas the jokes were probably acceptable in 2010 (and the early 2000s when the original series took place) there are certainly many parts of it that are completely unacceptable now. If they released the same film in 2021, there would be mass outrage which would definitely lead to a boycott.

Despite the apparent ignorance (maybe Abu Dhabi wasn't the right place to set this particular venture) there was a lot to enjoy, but maybe a second movie was a step too far for this franchise. If anything, it did intrigue me a little bit, and may have convinced me to give the original series a go. I wonder if I would have a different opinion if I had watched everything that came before and had an attachment to the characters. Maybe that's an article for another time!

Day #20 - Bridget Jones's Diary

20/2/2021

Bridget Jones is single in her 30s. She doesn't like her body, she finds her job boring, and she hates that at every family gathering she is asked how her love life is going, when it isn't going at all. She starts writing a diary with the thought that it might help her lose weight, stop smoking and start being healthier and then maybe she will find the man of her dreams. But is that man bad boy Daniel Cleaver or put-together Mark Darcy?

This is a romcom classic. Renee Zellweger perfectly embodies the awkward and charmingly funny Bridget Jones. And the story is coloured with only the best music from the 60s-00s.

Bridget is a great heroine - she is imperfect, she can be rude, she can be pathetically desperate and she acts and speaks without thought. So many romcoms from that era have leading ladies who have the perfect body, hair, job (not that there's anything wrong with this) and expect the audience to feel sorry for them for not having a boyfriend. It's unrealistic. Bridget Jones is someone that every woman can relate to. She doesn't meet the high beauty standards set for every woman, and she isn't this perfect English lady - in fact, she is the exact opposite.

Not that there aren't things that annoy me about this film; we as an audience are made to feel sorry for a woman who has a beautiful flat next to Borough Market that she can somehow afford on a junior publicist's salary, and she has two of film's most attractive men, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant, fighting over her for an hour and a half. However, the loveable nature of the leading lady does distract you from this very well.

This (and it's subsequent films) is my perfect movie for a night where I'm not feeling so great about myself and my situation. It is, and always will be, a classic.

Day #19 - The Perfect Date

19/2/2021

Brooks Rattigan is desperate to go to Yale. So that he can afford it, he creates an app where girls pay him to be their perfect stand-in date for an evening for any occasion of their choosing.

I don't have a lot to say about this movie. I don't like it. It's a very weird premise and they did not pull it off very well at all.

Brooks does one job for a popular guy at school where he takes his cousin Celia to her school dance for money. From this, he creates an app with his best friend Murph called The Stand In - girls can choose personality traits and outfits to create the perfect guy for their evening. Brooks also pretends to date Celia on the side so that they can both get their crushes attentions. Both of them quickly realise that they people they have crushes on are wooden, empty, snooty rich kids. Along the way, Brooks ruins his relationships with both Murph and Celia because the app makes him a bad friend.

I'm not entirely sure what about the app makes him a bad friend to be honest, Brooks pretty much has the same narcissistic personality throughout and he only stats to change when he loses his friends. But only slightly. Yes he becomes less superficial and materialistic but he still somehow makes his friends feelings about how lonely he gets without them. His apologies to both of them are long paragraphs about who he keeps pretending to be and that he's sorry if that made them feel bad.

Strangely though, that's not the wierdest part of this movie. Nor is it the fact that an 18-year-old can code a perfectly working app in two days. The most unbelievable part of it all is that an American teenager doesn't know what Reddit is. That line really threw me for a minute there.

If I were you, I wouldn't waste my time with this movie. I have watched it twice in my lifetime and that is two times too many.

Day #18 - Friends With Benefits

18/2/2021

Jamie and Dylan are just friends. And they both miss sex. Why not strike up a deal? They're both single and they aren't attracted to each other so what's the harm? Turns out it's not as easy as they think.

I love this film - it's funny, it's loveable, it's frustrating. It's everything you want in a good romcom. Two singles, who are incredibly unlucky in love, and who have both been told that they are emotionally damaged, decide that the best way to take a break from dating is sleeping with each other - without all the emotion of course. They even swear on a Bible that it won't get awkward. Which, of course, means things definitely will.

I usually don't like Justin Timberlake in movies (I personally think he should stick to singing), but he's pretty decent in this one. Of course it helps that he has Mila Kunis by his side who always kills it in every role she does. These two make a great workaholic-douche-with-a-heart-of-gold and insecure-quirky-hopeless-romantic pairing, and they play off their friendship-turned-romance flawlessly.

Not only is the relationship between these two characters very fun and heartwarming to watch, it is set against the fantastic scenery of New York City and Los Angeles. Scenes happen on rooftops looking out on a lit up NYC at night and a midday view of the hills from the Hollywood sign, providing a fantastic backdrop to the film. Also, Woody Harrelson's character is one of the best elements.

If you are looking for a film that is fun and predictable, I would suggest Friends With Benefits - very little emotion so there will definitely be no tears! It's light and easy to watch, making it great for any casual movie night.

Day #17 - Dear John

17/2/2021

John and Savannah fall in love one spring whilst he is on break from the special forces. They promise to stay together and keep in touch through letters. When 9/11 happens and John re-enlists, this puts a strain on the relationship. However, it is impossible to keep these two apart and John and Savannah drift towards each other over and over again.

Dear John is a classic Nicholas Sparks story. These make me cry without fail every single time, which is why they are some of my favourite films. They tug at your heartstrings and make you feel so deeply for the misery that the characters are repeatedly put through.

One thing I always loved about these films is that the story is always simple and straightforward. No matter how sad everything becomes you know it will end peacefully. And there is never a complicated conflict - we are simply shown a relationship that has ups and downs and doesn't go smoothly. Yes, some are more dramatic than others, but it's always the same formula.

Dear John is no different. This particular Sparks story is told through the eyes of John (Channing Tatum). The audience experiences his various tours in the army and his difficult home life with him. We see him go through love, loss and grief. And we see him find hope again. We see him reconnect with his father and we see what is a very stern and serious man find joy by loving someone. It's such a beautiful story, showing that the things that matter will always find their way back to you.

If you are planning on watching this, make sure you've got lots of tissues at the ready (and maybe a bottle of water to re-hydrate afterwards!).

Day #16 - The Last Summer

16/2/2021

The summer between high school and college - anything is possible, and these recent graduates are going to do as much as they can. Whether it's acting on old crushes, trying to sneak into bars or having as many flings as they can, they know this is their last chance before college life takes over.

This is another ensemble film - as you may remember from previous posts, ensemble films are some of my favourites.  It was nice seeing the difference of the teen perspective in this format (usually it's a group of 20- or 30-somethings) and this is a great cast to do it.

However, I was a little let down by this film. Not that I was expecting something crazy exciting. This just fell flat. There were some humorous parts, and the relationships were all very cute, but the biggest dramas were two teenagers breaking up and one guy finding out his crush's mum was dating his dad. It had a rhythm of relationship scene, to funny scene, to party scene, and repeat, which got old after a while. It was very easy for me to tune this film out for about two thirds of it.

There was one storyline that I really loved - Audrey becomes a nanny to a child actress Lilah and they end up forming a great bond. Audrey grounds Lilah, whilst Lilah's simple childlike outlook on the drama in Audrey's life helps her realise that she still has lots of options despite struggling to get into college. I wished there was more shown of this storyline as their relationship was just so fun to see.

This movie is good, but it is definitely one that now I've seen it, I probably won't watch it again.
